Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “That’s What That Is.” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

Video for “That’s What That Is” the 2nd Track from Sonic Twist’s® CD “Unity.”

Sonic Twist’s® edgy video “That’s What That Is” highlights singer Judi Silvano’s rare ability to improvise music and words simultaneously. Guitarist Bruce Arnold initially follows her opening phrase, and then adds his own processed sounds, through the track’s many moods. For this video Sonic Twist® called in dancer Maria Mitchell to interpret the music, and she responded with her own spatial improvisations including a recurring motif of Time as she conjured up a sun dial marking the minutes and hours, underscoring the words Moment…Now…Before.

The vocal becomes more intense is it goes from ruminations on Time to its relationship to identity. Videographer Michal Shapiro and Judi Silvano worked together on coordinating Maria Mitchell’s movements by literally slowing down the time in parts of the dance, and overlapping images where the vocal is highly processed. This is what makes “That’s What That Is” such a weirdly exhilarating experience.

Quotes and Reviews of Sonic Twist® Unity CD

  • Sonic Twist® is a duo of Judi Silvano on vocals and Bruce Arnold on guitar; both of them contribute various electronics to this 45-minute CD, which was produced by Silvano and engineered by Arnold. The vocalists who have inspired Silvano in the past continue to influence her on Unity, like Sheila Jordan, Betty Carter and Jeanne Lee. All of them became masters at interpreting familiar lyrics and so did Silvano. But on Unity, while some of the selections contain lyrics, including “That’s What That Is” and “I Saw That”, Silvano mostly expresses herself with wordless scat improvisation. Silvano and Arnold enjoy a strong rapport throughout this album and one of the things that makes them compatible is Arnold’s use of space. He favors an airy, floating sound along the lines of Pat Metheny and the late Jim Hall. But what Arnold does on Unity is much more left-of-center. None of these selections rely on traditional song structures or a head/solos/head format. Silvano and Arnold’s improvisations are quite free form, but never in a combative way. This is the type of avant garde expression that values subtlety and understatement rather than going out of its way to clobber the listener. Inside/outside offerings like “Bruce’s Boogie”, “Hovercraft”, “Confabulation” and “Shimmer Down”—all improvised—are never abrasive. Unity doesn’t confront; it floats and reflects. 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Silvano’s first recording as a leader, Dancing Voices. Silvano has recorded a lot more albums since then, making her mark with a wide range of projects and collaborators. This CD makes maximum use of her avant garde talents and Arnold is a consistently intuitive collaborator for the veteran singer.

  • Sonic Twist’s UNITY – I’ve been a fan of this duo for a LONG time now… with Judi Silvano’s vocals and Bruce Arnold’s guitar you won’t find any more adventurous ambient electronic music than this. A true sense of freedom is conveyed as you listen… and your heart will come away from these songs jam-packed with the joy of living! I give Sonic Twist a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99.

  • Next comes the latest experimental release from the jazz duo, Sonic Twist®. Their new album titled “Unity” features seventeen tracks that utilizes the vocal abilities of Judi Silvano and the guitar work of Bruce Arnold. The album begins with the flowing sounds of “A Ha” and the subtle changes to “Capricious,” which find the two artists creating sonic dance with sounds. Bruce gets his moment to work the pedals of his guitar to create the unique sounds of “Bruce’s Boogie,” while “Lacewing” has a bluesy feel to the music. The ambient feel of “Flutterby” and “Home Free” display another dimension to the music created by Sonic Twist®, along with the exciting, experimental piece “Shaman’s Plane,” which grabs your attention and never lets go. The album finishes with the ska-jazz sounds of “Frisky” and psychedelic flow of “Compression Expansion.” To find out more about Sonic Twist® and their latest release “Unity,” please visit facebook.com/sonictwist.

  • From elation to wonder, from bursting out of refracted jagged edges to engaging in light-hearted wonderment at the “mysteries of life”, to reflective moods of acceptance and contemplation, Unity is (a) breathtakingly expansive, and wholly enjoyable 17-track album.

Anne Carlini – Exclusive Magazine – CD Reviews

  • The music on Unity is surprising, delicate, luminous, playful and otherworldly. It manifests generosity of spirit and exquisite listening. Several titles refer to stages in the lives of butterflies. In shamanic traditions, the butterfly is a symbol of transformation, joy and creativity, and my spirit felt transformed listening to this music!

    Marilyn Crispell, pianist, composer, improviser

  • Judi Silvano and Bruce Arnold are traveling together in space as one voice!

    Kenny Werner, pianist, composer

  • Judi Silvano & Bruce Arnold have found a home for their musical conversations in a duo setting that feels both natural and adventurous. The element of technology that adorns their inventions succeeds, to my ear, because it simply offers other ways of hearing each other’s sense of the whole picture as it unfolds. Their connection remains rooted in the forever powerful tools of rhythm, counterpoint and harmonic agreement and tension. As well the two are clearly having a good deal of fun with where some of the processing takes them, and it’s a pleasure to participate, as a listener, in their playfulness.

Gerry Hemingway, drums, percussion, composer, educator

  • “Judi and Bruce have combined their creative energies to bring us a wonderful, fresh, new, and compelling album that rewards the listener with new subtleties on subsequent audits. It’s a peaceful, thoughtful, bright, kaleidoscopic, warm, and elevated state-of-the-art duo project that I hope will have an extended run.”

James Emery – guitarist, composer, mystical vibration Work healer

  • When I listen to Judi Silvano & Bruce Arnold on their new recording ”Unity”, I see vast arrays of colors that fly by my eyes. Colors of musical expression, love and dedication. To me, that’s what their sound is all about. A fresh experience. Thank you.

  • These freely improvised duets for voice and guitar create an uplifting kind of energy. They will appeal to fans of “free jazz,” and more generally, they will delight anyone who likes to put on “ambient music” to fill up one’s living space with positive vibes.

Lewis Porter – pianist, educator, author

  • I first met Judi 21 years ago, as a student at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Judi was my ensemble director and was one of the first teachers to introduce me to completely improvised music. She shared the importance of freedom, intent, listening, interaction, developing a personal language, and creating an emotional connection with both the musicians and audience. On this album, we hear those sentiments fully expressed and realized in this intimate duo. UNITY is a beautiful, fearless, entirely improvised conversation between two unique performers that draws the audience in with every listening.

    Kris Davis, pianist and composer

  • After an initial listen, Unity has already become my favorite album … The louder I push up the volume, the more I’m enjoying this musical therapy session.

Laurence Donohue-Greene – Managing Editor (The New York City Jazz Record)

  • ….. love the Sonic Twist® “Unity album.” I smiled all the way through – really great short-form pieces that each create a mood and then go on to the next. These short explorations are clever, emotional, sonically interesting, and joyous when taken as a whole. The playing and singing is “playful,” yet exhibit a seriously high level command of the instruments.

    Dave Mash, musician, educator, futurist

  • Some of my favorite music contains the element of discovery, with the listener being able to travel along with the musicians while they explore new territory (instead of retreading old paths). Sonic Twist®, an empathetic and interactive duo project by vocalist Judi Silvano and guitarist Bruce Arnold, has those qualities – in addition to being deep, playful, and fun. Bruce (employing supercollider) and Judi (electronics) use effects to serve the music and they venture into some uncharted territory, with confidence and joy in a collaborative aural dance. Check out this recording!

    Kenny Wessel, guitarist, composer, educator

  • This is the third offering by the duo SONIC TWIST with Judi Silvano on voice and Bruce Arnold on guitar. Although both of these musicians come from mostly jazz backgrounds, their combined efforts come from a more experimental, open-ended area. All of the pieces here (17) are relatively short, under 3 & 1/2 minutes and they create different moods… unique, adventurous and unclassifiable.

Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery DMG

  • These freely improvised duets for voice and guitar create an uplifting kind of energy. They will appeal to fans of “free jazz,” and more generally, they will delight anyone who likes to put on “ambient music” to fill up one’s living space with positive vibes.

Lewis Porter, jazz pianist, educator, author

  • On “Unity,” vocalist Judi Silvano masterfully improvises a series of short-form songs with guitarist Bruce Arnold that mirror the compositional qualities of still life paintings. Imagine a gallery wall with a display of arresting 12×15” paintings that intermingle expressionistic realism with neon-electric abstract angles. The Duo unifies to approach their joint canvas, as they dot, dart, slant and swirl their colors together. Judi’s warm and rich human timbre is frequently collaged with electronic pitch alterations that are produced with soulful vibrancy. Listen to how Silvano and Arnold carve time-space with a full palette of sound-waves and you’ll hear-see a joyous celebration of life.”

Katie Bull, Vocalist, Composer, Writer, Founder/Whole Body Voice

  • The tonal empathy between Arnold and Silvano can be mesmerizing, so seamlessly do the two voices blend to create sinuously compelling soundscapes.

    Stephen Gauci, saxophonist, improviser

  • Judi Silvano is surely one of the most multi-dimensional improvising vocalists of this era. The variety and output of her musical catalogue was already impressive (to put it mildly), but in the last several years she and musical partner guitarist Bruce Arnold have been opening up new portals for sonic exploration. From the very first notes of the opening track on their third CD, “Unity” I was eager to hear the rest of the album. Judi and Bruce draw from a seemingly endless well of ideas, yet there’s never a superfluous note, and the music they make together is surprising, inventive, and utterly engaging.

    Andrea Wolper, vocalist, composer, educator

  • Judi Silvano and Bruce Arnold engage joyously with an open, exploratory spirit. Every syllable, every note is an opportunity to play, unpack and transform. Unity is an album with 17 miniatures where Judi and Bruce bring the listener right into their “playground.” What a thrill to hear an interaction so free and filled with the spark of discovery and sensory delight.

The Tracks from Sonic Twist’s® “Unity” CD.

For the “Unity” CD Sonic Twist® picked “composing in the moment” pieces from the vast repertoire that were more adventurous in nature.

Video for “A Ha” from Sonic Twist’s® CD “Unity”

This composing in the moment piece was one of the first Sonic Twist® recorded in front of a green screen which adds endless visual possibilities to any video. While listening back to the take, editor Michal Shapiro and Sonic Twist® agreed that there was something reminiscent of a flowing current in the music. Rather than looking for footage of water however, Michal Shapiro decided to take a less literal approach, and used her own collage “Algae” as a backdrop and keyed it to the music’s transitions. The result is “A-Ha!” a refreshing and happy video.

“Capricious”

Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “Capricious” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

“Capricious” by Sonic Twist®

Sonic Twist’s® playful performance of “Capricious” was captured on video during an early session at the Heard Instinct Studio. It offers a glimpse into just how spontaneous and interactive vocalist Judi Silvano and guitarist Bruce Arnold can be. There are no effects on the voice or the guitar, and one can plainly see the music as it is being made in the moment. It is pure pleasure to see and hear this kind of delightful interplay, as Judi Silvano slips, slides and warbles like a lark with Bruce Arnold buoying her up like a sprightly gust of Spring wind.

“Confabulation” by Sonic Twist®

Sonic Twist’s® video of “Confabulation” is like an abstract Twilight Zone episode. The video is plainly disturbing as it shows how a person who is troubled can wink in and out of realities. The dancer Maria Mitchell reacted to the eerie music of Sonic Twist® (Bruce Arnold , guitar and vocalist Judi Silvano) by limiting her movements, like a frightened child. The use of mirror images and positive/negative visuals enhances the nightmarish quality of her every move. Judi Silvano and Bruce Arnold wink in and out of the video like spirits, and Maria Mitchell seems as if she is torn in two; sometimes she is her own Siamese twin, sometimes she is no more than two hands. Musically the same is true; it functions as the inner voice in conflict.

Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “I Saw That” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

“I Saw That” by Sonic Twist®

Vocalist Judi Silvano has a way with words, and she mines her own subconscious to express them in her work with guitarist Bruce Arnold . In Sonic Twist’s® “I Saw That” she starts off in a whisper, with Bruce Arnold joining in only as a pulse point, and giving her free rein to wander wherever she will. And wander she does; free-associating through evocative inner dialogues. When it came time to create a video for the piece, videographer Michal Shapiro. felt strongly that the transitions from one fleeting idea to another conjured up the thought processes of –perhaps a dog? As fate would have it, Georgia the miniature dachshund was the perfect subject, and her owner, artist Joshua Abelow was willing to follow her around over the course of several days and donate the footage. Remarkably, Georgia’s high metabolism was totally in sync with Bruce Arnold’s guitar pulsations – even her tail wagged in time! The final wonderful coincidence was Georgia’s excursion over to the neighboring rural cemetery, perfectly visualizing Judi ‘s extemporaneous rumination on mortality: “Why do we have to stop—why can’t we go on like this some more?” This is a charming video featuring the adorable mini-dachshund Georgia. She is sadly is no longer with us. But Sonic Twist’s® “I Saw That” is a fine memento of this affectionate, whimsical creature.

Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “Bruce’s Boogie” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

“Bruce’s Boogie” by Sonic Twist®

“Bruce’s Boogie” is Sonic Twist® at its funkiest and most playful. Named after one of music’s dancingest grooves, (and guitarist Bruce Arnold , of course) the music struts and bounces on a clavinet-like sound, with singer Judi Silvano dropping in to add some vocal “spicy noodles!” Inspired by the music, dancer Hilary Brown wore a very stylized striped shirt – a nod to the legendary Lockers, perhaps? Needless to say, the shirt supplied all kinds of inspirations, from gestures to video motifs, and also added an element of whimsey that was perfect for the music. In putting the video together, videographer Michal Shapiro. noted the way that the stripes expanded and contracted with Hilary Brown’s undulating torso, creating an almost-moiré effect. Taking her cue from that, Michal Shapiro created a slowly moving horizontal stripe for a background, that echoed and interacted with Hilary Brown’s movements. Add some super-saturated colors with layered dancing and the effect of “Bruce’s Boogie” is part Op Art, part Psychedelia, and all Funk.

Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “Dryads” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

“Dryads” by Sonic Twist®

The spirits that inhabit trees awaken in the Sonic Twist® video “Dryads.” Opening with Bruce Arnold’s guitar shimmering like wind in the forest, the video finds dancer Hilary Brown (the Dryad) in her leafy home and emerging from its trunk. Vocalist Judi Silvano sounds the echoing calls of other Dryads to awaken. At first almost transparent, the Dryad becomes more corporeal as the video progresses, and the spirits rise into the treetops, where the sun in the high branches becomes hallucinatory and the Dryads celebrate. In a change of pace, guitarist Bruce Arnold and Singer Judi Silvano conjure a sudden gust of wind; dancer Hilary Brown is tossed about, but then, drawing strength from the leaves, the Dryad subdues the activity and sinks back into her tree form. “Dryads” is a haunting video with an animist heart.

Below you will find audio and video from the Sonic Twist® release entitled “Lacewing” The video for this composition was created by Michal Shapiro.

“Lacewing” by Sonic Twist®

The guitar figure played by Bruce Arnold that opens Sonic Twist’s® video “Lacewing” summons up the flight of a tiny winged creature and vocalist Judi Silvano’s entrance continues this delicate reference. For videographer Michal Shapiro, it recalls a fond childhood memory of evening summers in the country, when after chasing lightning bugs, she would sometimes see diminutive Lacewings perched on window screens. These nocturnal insects can be seen from dusk to dawn, as they feast on flower nectar and pollen. Their pale green translucent wings and copper eyes give them an especially fragile beauty. The video “Lacewing” pays homage to both lace and lacewings with motifs of classic embroidered lace to depict clouds, forests, flowers and fields in sunlight that wanes into the night. The music by guitarist Bruce Arnold and vocalist Judi Silvano creates the energy of that day, and ends with a gentle goodnight diminuendo.”

“Hovercraft” by Sonic Twist®

Sonic Twist’s® video “Hovercraft” demonstrates the visual similarities between the arteries of traffic and the arteries that keep us alive. Bruce Arnold’s Guitar sound seems to be calling from faraway—perhaps beaming the music down from a drone? Singer Judi Silvano’s voice is likewise hushed and whispery, as if half heard from another room. When casting about for the proper images for the video, editor Michal Shapiro came across terrific aerial footage of intersections and highways shot from far above, which lent the perfect visual to the sense of hovering movement implied by Sonic Twist’s® music. In “Hovercraft” the micro and macro worlds exist together, as cars and trucks become platelets, and a traffic circle takes the place of a beating heart!

“Ha” by Sonic Twist®

From the minute it begins, Sonic Twist’s® “HA” takes the listener into a fantasy game of hide and seek, or perhaps a Halloween gremlin hunt! Vocalist Judi Silvano growls and snickers impishly, while Bruce Arnold’s highly processed guitar summons up alternately marching and running footsteps, sometimes on dry land, sometimes through rainy terrain. In attempting to put a visual to such a bizarre landscape, videographer Michal Shapiro took the actual impromptu performance and mimicked the delay singer Judi Silvano was using (and which is reflected in Bruce Arnold’s guitar processing as well) by creating a secondary semi opaque layer a microsecond apart. The musical action runs in starts and finishes with a slower and slower echoing tempo. Has the gremlin been run to ground, or escaped into the mist?

In “Home Free,” Sonic Twist® (the duo of Bruce Arnold , guitar and Judi Silvano, voice) summons up a restful afternoon, surrounded by the simple things that make Home our place of refuge and relaxation. Judi Silvano sings a sweet melodic line as Bruce Arnold intuits just the right chords to take it into reverie territory. In the video, sunlight skims off windchimes, shimmers on the leaves of a house plant, and filters placidly through a kitchen window. The languid music of Sonic Twist® caresses the ear like a lullaby, and Bruce Arnold’s final major chord most emphatically takes us Home Free.

“Chrysalis” by Sonic Twist®

Sonic Twist’s® instrumental video “Chrysalis” is a weird combination of science fiction and nature documentary imagery. It opens with Bruce Arnold using his guitar processing to chitter and tweet, evoking the instinctive struggles of something small to break out of its egg- or its shell. His guitar then adds mysterious, tremolo chords enforcing the sense of suspense and wonder. Sonic Twist’s ® videographer Michal Shapiro. brought the “Chrysalis” to life through a hand dance with visuals that can be interpreted as insectile, sub-marine or microscopic; case in point, the confounding survivalist nonpareil, the Tardigrade.

The eerie whooping and vocal gestures of singer Judi Silvano” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>Judi Silvano open Sonic Twist’s® video “Shaman’s Plane.” Her voice is doubled and split into different times and timbres, suggesting a shaman’s chant summoning forth spirits of earth and sky. Bruce Arnold artfully controls the powerful loop generated between SuperCollider and his Delay Llama processor on electric guitar. This produces a wide variety of evocative sounds, from a subterranean rumble to raindrops in a meadow. “Frisky” by Sonic Twist®

Because Sonic Twist’s® “Unity” is completely comprised of music composed in the moment, the pieces have been named after they were created, not before. The name of each piece is based on the kinds of associations the music conjures up, and agreed on by singer Judi Silvano” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>Judi Silvano” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>Judi Silvano, guitarist Bruce Arnold , and videographer Michal Shapiro.” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>Michal Shapiro , after careful listening. The whimsical energy expressed by “Frisky” gave the track its name. How better than a cat, then, to provide a visual embodiment? Michal Shapiro sent out an open call to friends and cat lovers, and with the footage that was sent, created “Frisky” the video. It’s a tribute to the funnier side of felines; they are not always graceful and mysterious! Here their legendary curiosity and sense of play are on full display. (Their owners get into the show on occasion – but only the random hand or foot.) Judi Silvano keeps her vocals lighthearted and Bruce Arnold plays guitar lines that jump and skitter.
